Past, Present, Future. While reading the TC Online Nursing Education (ONE) Student Profiles, I reflected on my own reasons for choosing TC for doctoral studies. When I was in the MA nursing program at NYU, many of the professors that I admired the most received their doctorates from TC. NYU’s Division of Nursing was known to some as “downtown TC.” My employer at the time, Dr. Robert V. Piemonte, Executive Director of the National Student Nurses’ Association, also a TC graduate, talked a lot about the history of TC and the remarkable leaders in higher education who were spawned there. I remember attending events at TC prior to becoming a TC student and imagined hearing the footsteps of great nursing leaders walking the creaking wooden corridors of Dodge Hall—the same hallways I was now traversing. TheTC cafeteria also holds special memories of lunches and breaks with my TC Executive Program cohort and attending special events there and in the Milbank Chapel.I am not sure what it is that connects us to TC’s past, but it continues to be present. Kesha Becnel, TC ONE program student, stated that the most important reason why she chose TC was because, “it was Teachers College at Columbia which has an outstanding reputation of producing nurse educators who have led nursing education to where it is today.”This sentiment was echoed by Marilyn Campbell, another ONE program student who stated, “I chose to apply to Teachers College because this institution has produced notable alumni who have vastly contributed to research and education.” As TC alumni let’s reach out to all TC nursing students and recent graduates and connect the past and the present to the future of nursing education at TC.
